Dating back to the Ancient Greeks, the railway was designed to help the development of export companies. These days, trains are used for many reasons; the main one being helping people to get from one destination to another. Despite millions of people using the train every day, many don’t stop to appreciate the beautiful views surrounding their journey.
From spectacular views of the English Riviera, to a ride through the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, we’ve unearthed some of Britain’s most scenic train journeys.
The Riviera Line
Described as one of the most scenic rail journeys in the UK, The Riviera Line is one of the best ways to take in the beautiful surroundings of the English Riviera, South Devon.
From Exeter to Paignton, and the nine stops in between, you’ll get to enjoy spectacular views of beautiful beaches, green countryside, and famous river crossings. The journey will take you through several picturesque villages and towns.
Just 15 minutes from Torquay Holiday Park, Torquay Train Station is the first stop from Paignton to Exeter, so you can take a day off from driving and discover the picturesque coastline by train.
Whether you’d like to go shopping on the high street in Newton Abbot, take a walk along the beach in Dawlish, or learn about the ancient city of Exeter, you’ll easily find something to do wherever you step off the train.

The St Ives Bay Line
The St Ives Bay Line, which travels between St Ives and St Erth, passes through some of the most beautiful scenery in the UK. This short and sweet journey gives you spectacular views that you would miss if you travelled by car.
The St Ives Bay Line opened in 1877 to help bring tourists into the area, and has since contributed towards making St Ives one of the most popular UK holiday destinations. The journey along this single track will give you magnificent views of the golden sands and blue seas.
Once you step off the train, there are plenty of activities to get stuck into at this popular seaside resort. You can get lost around the maze of narrow streets, visit the many galleries, shops, and pubs, or perhaps go for a paddle along the bay. St Erth is less than 30 minutes from Lizard Point Holiday Park, so why not take the train and discover all of what the St Ives Bay Line has to offer.

Durham to Berwick-upon-Tweed
Named the most scenic rail route in Britain by the Country Life Magazine, the journey from Durham to Berwick-upon-Tweed will provide you with idyllic views of the North-East of England.
With Durham under 30 minutes from Crimdon Dene Holiday Park and Berwick-upon-Tweed even closer to Eyemouth Holiday Park, why not spend the day enjoying this majestic train journey for yourself? Along the way, you’ll pass by many historic sites, including Durham Cathedral, Alnwick and Bamburgh Castle, and the many bridges that cross the River Tyne. The glistening coastline and rolling hills will take your breath away, before reaching one of these charming destinations.
Whichever direction you go on this journey, there will be plenty to do when you get there. Whether you want to discover the history of Durham or explore the beautiful coast of Berwick, the whole family is guaranteed a great day out.

Settle to Carlisle
Just 20 minutes from Todber Valley Holiday Park is Settle Railway Station, the starting point for another one of Britain’s stunning rail routes. The Settle to Carlisle journey was ranked the second-best train trip by ABC, an American news network, and it’s easy to see why.
Passing through the heart of the Yorkshire Dales and the North Pennines, this 23-mile long railway line was constructed in the 1870s. It’s famous for crossing more than 20 viaducts, and running through 14 tunnels. The line was built by over 6,000 workers, and the remains of one of their camps, Batty Green, can still be seen today near Ribblehead Viaduct.
