Unique Family Activities in Devon and Cornwall

Discover Endless Family Fun in the South West

Parkdean Resorts by Parkdean Resorts on 20/04/2018
Coasteering with Newquay Activity Centre

Forget sitting on the sidelines and watching the kids have all the fun. Holidays are for maxing out on adventure, trying something new and spending time together as a family. It’s what memories are made of.

Plan some family time together on your next trip to the South West by checking out some of Devon and Cornwall’s most unusual and exciting family activities below.

Super SUP and Coasteering, Newquay

Whether you’re a high adrenaline kind of family or are action-packed newbies, the ocean mad team at Newquay Activity Centre will find the tempo that’s right for you and get you togged up and raring to go in the water. From family surf lessons to rock pool safaris, they’ve got a pick of activities especially designed to suit a range of ages - but it’s their brand new Family Super SUP and Coasteer that caught our eye.

Combining two awesome activities into one it sees families working together to ride a Super SUP (think a giant stand-up paddle board holding up to eight people) along the gorgeous north Cornish coast before taking part in some fun family games (King of the SUP, Sumo SUP and SUP racing). Then it’s onto coasteering to traverse the cliffs! Navigate your way through natural rapids and, if you’re feeling brave, leap from towering rock formations into the sea below.

More than the guaranteed giggles and gaffs, physical exercise and family bonding, you and your children will leave having learnt how to kneel and stand up paddle, perfect paddle strokes, navigate the coastline, and identify local marine life.

It’s an absolute must if you’re holidaying at one of our North Cornwall holiday parks.

Kayaking on the River Torridge, Appledore

Kayaking on the River Torridge is another winner in the family action corner. Round up the clan and with an expert from Skern Lodge as your guide, enjoy a private half or full day session kayaking downstream from Bideford to Appledore. You’ll be kitted out in all the gear and as well as being taught kayaking techniques there will be games aplenty with likes of rafting, stand up challenges and paddle races against the tide.

Go with a sense of adventure and be prepared to get wet - the instructors and, more than likely, your kids will make sure of it!

Find Skern Lodge on the North Devon Coast, just 40 minutes from Ruda Holiday Park.

Sculpture workshop, Wadebridge

Families that share a creative flair will absolutely love The Sculpture Workshop in Wadebridge, 10 minutes down the road from St Minver Holiday Park.

Roll up your sleeves and get stuck into modelling a head from clay in a two-hour session led by a talented tutor. They’ll tease out your inner Picasso and help you to create a holiday memento loaded with laughs, personality and treasured family moments. Ramp up the giggle factor by getting everyone to sculpt a family member – Dad’s sure to come out a little higgledy piggledy while the youngest members of the family will love seeing themselves cast in artistic form.

Sea Safari, Ilfracombe

Hold on and get ready for an adventure, Ilfracombe Sea Safari is seriously high speed, high adrenaline and high on the list of must dos. Jump on the RIB for an ultimate wet and wild ride; 25 minutes of guaranteed thrills, spills and white water moves.

It’s suitable for children over 6 while families with younger, or less high octane members, can pick from a whole raft of less extreme boat trips. Choose from sea safaris that cruise along the north Devon coastline spotting seals, dolphins, porpoises, sunfish and coastal scenery or a sunset safari and even an impressive four-hour wildlife tour of Lundy Island, 20 miles off shore. It includes a close encounter with Lundy’s 200 Atlantic Grey seals and plenty of photo opportunities. Whatever trip you pick, it will be a family talking point for years to come and is only 20 minutes from Ruda Holiday Park.

Chocolate workshop, St Ives

Hands up if you like chocolate. Yes, us too and we just know you’ll be in chocolate heaven at Coco Kitchen in St Ives. This is where everyone from little tots to Granny and Grandpa can indulge their sweet tooth and become a chocolatier by enrolling on a recently launched chocolate workshop.

Dive in as a family and get moulding, designing and decorating a selection of sweet treats using white, milk or dark chocolate, then sprinkle on the toppings of your choice. Delicious!

Coco Kitchen is 40 minutes from Mullion and Sea Acres, our holiday parks on the Lizard Peninsula.
