A great way to really make a holiday special is to attend an unforgettable event, and in this blog post, we’re listing some great events that spread the length and breadth of the country - from the bizarre to the invigorating.

If you’re staying at one of our holiday parks on the Lincolnshire coast, such as Southview Holiday Park in Skegness or Sunnydale Holiday Park between Mablethorpe and Cleethorpes, then keep an eye out for these famous local events.

Just inland from Lincolnshire’s beaches and inlets, nestled amongst the Wolds is Cadwell Park motor racing circuit. You’ll find events taking place all year round, but we’d recommend a visit during the British Superbikes weekend - which falls between 17th-19th of August this year.

Featuring high-speed action over the famous ‘Mountain’ section of track, a day at the racing is certain to entertain the little ones, and can be the centrepiece of a fantastic holiday at any of our resorts on the Lincolnshire coast.

If your tastes lean towards the equestrian, then Burghley Horse Trials is the Lincolnshire event for you. Just outside the pretty town of Stamford, in the grounds of the beautiful Burghley House, some of the world’s best horse riders take on a series of challenging jumps and dressage events. This year’s event takes place between 30th August-2nd September.

Jumping across the country, a stay at any of our holiday parks in Devon won’t be complete without having a look at some local events taking place. An eye-catching event on the local calendar is the British Fireworks Championships taking place in the city of Plymouth. Here, some of the country’s best fireworkers get involved in a fierce competition to pull off the best and most epic fireworks display possible. A key reason why this is such as great family day out is that it’s a rare occasion - providing a firework display in warm summer weather, where you’ll feel a long way from Bonfire Night.

If you do find yourself in Devon during bonfire night, make sure you check out the Tar Barrels at Ottery St. Mary, where brave local residents parade through the pretty village carrying flaming barrels of tar above their heads. It’s certainly a unique spectacle!

Isle of Wight

The Isle of Wight has always been a great venue for big-ticket events, from the heyday of the Isle of Wight festival when an estimated 400,000 people descended on the island to see acts like Jimi Hendrix play.

These days, the festival is more sedate, but no less prestigious, as big acts such as The Killers, Liam Gallagher and Depeche Mode are set to headline the festival in 2018. We’d recommend grabbing a day ticket before returning to any of our holiday parks on the Isle of Wight for a comfortable night’s sleep away from the buzzing festival campsites.

Another Isle of Wight event that is simply unmissable is the Round the Island Race - in which sailing boats race around the coastline of the island. A great thing to do on a race day is to find the perfect viewing spot and sit back and watching the sails pass by while enjoying an al fresco picnic.

North East

Northumberland and County Durham are also hotspots for events in the summer. A particularly eye-catching and successful event that is sure to wow the whole family (and provide the little ones with a historical education) is Kynren - an impressive open air show with a cast of 1,500 that takes place in Bishop Auckland, County Durham. It’s the UK’s only open-air show of its kind and runs on Saturdays all summer long.

An event that keeps in tune with the region’s maritime history, the Sunderland Tall Ships Races 2018 promises to be a great family day out. Previously held up the coast in Blyth, this event showcases some old-fashioned tall sailing boats from the age of worldwide trade powered by wind. The four-day-long extravaganza is set to bring thousands of visitors to the city, and is easily accessible from any of our holiday parks in the North East.
