About Ambleside

Situated on the northern shore of Lake Windermere, this pretty Victorian town has some lovely shops and some top-notch eateries, but it’s the outdoor adventures nearby that truly draw the crowds to Ambleside.

For fun on England’s biggest lake, wander down to Waterhead Pier. Here you can get active canoeing, sailing or paddleboarding, or take things easy on a gentle lake cruise – which has hop-on-hop-off stops all around Windermere’s shoreline.

Easily strollable from Ambleside, Stock Ghyll Force waterfall is a glittering cascade that plummets 70ft through beautiful woodland. Follow the course of the river back into town and you’ll discover Bridge House, a sweet cottage that’s one of Lakeland’s most photographed sights.

Loughrigg Fell is a popular attraction too and lies just a short distance from Ambleside offering rewarding hiking and spectacular views. When the weather turns, get your adrenaline kicks at Ambleside Climbing Wall.
