About Dumfries

Once voted the happiest place to live in Scotland, Dumfries is a hubbub of history and culture.

Literary legend Robert Burns once lived in the riverside market town and you can explore his extraordinary work at his former home. It’s filled with original manuscripts and even the desk and chair at which he created famous pieces. And nearby you’ll find his final resting place and mausoleum at St Michael’s churchyard.

You can really delve into Dumfries’s past at the town’s museum, which has all sorts of artefacts, from ancient fossils to Victorian curios. The best of which has to be the fascinating Camera Obscura, an optical device that provides panoramic views of not only Dumfries, with its quirky alleyways and handsome stone buildings, but also the beautiful rolling countryside all around.

Elsewhere, the region’s other star attractions beckon, including Dalscone Farm Fun, Caerlaverock Castle and Dino Park.
