From fine dining to fish markets

As much as a holiday in Cornwall is enjoyed for its sandy beaches and stunning coastlines, a UK getaway is truly nothing without good food. Cornwall is home to an array of delicious restaurants and local cuisine - and who knows Cornwall restaurants better than the folks that live there?

We’ve chatted with Cornish locals Joel Bishop, owner of Westcountry Surf School and Susan Deakin, Manager of Visit Newquay to get their expert insight on seafood in Cornwall.

Under the sea: The history of seafood in Cornwall

Cornwall’s coasts host an array of fish and shellfish, including, mackerel, hake, pollock and sardines. Cornwall also places a strong emphasis on sustainable fishing practices to protect ecosystems and ensure the long-term viability of the fishing industry, with fishing guidelines to minimise their environmental impact.

There are also various seafood festivals to attend and enjoy throughout the year, such as the Falmouth Oyster Festival and the Newlyn Fish Festival. These events celebrate the region's maritime heritage and showcase the native seafood on offer. With cooking demonstrations, oyster bars and crab picking - the festivals are a great day out for all the family.

The best seafood restaurants in Cornwall, according to locals

Joel has lived in Cornwall his whole life, growing up in Looe. For seafood lovers, he recommends The Fish House in Newquay, “it gets very busy so you have to book, [but] it's not actually that expensive which is really good.” Susan, who has lived in Newquay for over 50 years also recommends The Fish House, saying, “It's just so popular. It's really hard to get into…it's fantastic.”

The Fish House is just a 15-minute drive from our Newquay Holiday Park, visitors can try it for themselves when staying at Parkdean Resorts.

Newquay Harbour fish market is a must-visit

If you’re self-catering at one of our holiday parks, Joel also recommends buying local fish: “...if you like cooking, you can go to the local fish market in Newquay down the bottom of the harbour if you wanted some fresh fish [to] cook it yourself - it's beautiful.”

Newquay Harbour gives you the “option to buy the fresh fish from the boats when they come in”, says Susan, adding, “It's just nice to sit there and watch the boats bobbing around a high tide.”

From traditional British fish and chips to fancy seafood platters, you can tuck in and enjoy a range of fresh fish in Cornwall.
