Parkdean Resorts, the UK’s leading holiday park operator, is making strides towards its sustainability goals with two eco-friendly supplier partnerships. The company is implementing improved cleaning products and will become the first UK holiday park operator to use sustainable waterproof mattresses, moves that will both reduce waste and help keep Britain’s beaches clean.

Working with mattress manufacturer Wow Sleep, from October 2023, every new 100% fully recyclable mattress that Parkdean Resorts purchases will have a built-in waterproof cover made from SEAQUAL® YARN, a material produced from recycled ocean plastic by SEAQUAL INITIATIVE. This collaborative community works with ocean clean-up programmes and local communities to collect marine plastic from the ocean, beaches and rivers and give it a new life.

Each mattress cover is removable, allowing them to be easily washed or replaced by staff, which will significantly reduce the number of mattresses disposed of. The move to sustainable fabric follows a series of initiatives that Parkdean Resorts has been undertaking as part of its dedication to protecting the planet and keeping our seas clean, including regular beach cleans around its parks up and down the country.

Parkdean Resorts has also secured a new contract with global sustainability leader, Ecolab, to improve its cleaning product range. Ecolab products including sanitisers, washing up liquid, carpet cleaners and air fresheners will be rolled out at all 65 parks over the next few months. Thanks to their reduced plastic content, the new products are easier to recycle and less harsh on the environment, meaning fewer chemicals will end up in seas, rivers and lakes.

Some of the cleaning products will be delivered to parks in the form of solid blocks which can then be diluted to go directly into a container or bottle, with Ecolab providing all the equipment needed to dose the products in a safe and environmentally-friendly process. The product is more concentrated and therefore longer lasting, meaning less transportation is required, ultimately reducing carbon emissions. Parkdean Resorts will be donating leftover stock to larger parks or to The Hygiene Bank, a charity which takes donations of cleaning products to distribute to local community groups, small businesses and charities in need.

Jane Bates, Director of Sustainability and Procurement at Parkdean Resorts, said: “We’re passionate about integrating environmental-friendly processes into every aspect of our business, and as we continue making strides in putting sustainability at the heart of The Great British Holiday, we are delighted to have found and be partnering with two incredibly impressive and innovative suppliers. “Investing in SEAQUAL® YARN and Ecolab cleaning products allows us to reduce waste at our parks while also supporting an initiative we care deeply about: keeping Britain’s beaches clean and safe.”

Parkdean Resorts recently published its first ever ESG report detailing its pledges to care for its parks, people, and planet by delivering 25 wide-ranging commitments by 2025, with plans covering renewable energy, reducing carbon emissions, and maintaining the natural beauty of 3,500 acres of land across its 65 parks throughout the UK.
