Caring for our planet
From reducing energy use and waste to conserving water and protecting biodiversity, we’re taking meaningful steps to operate more sustainably across our parks. Through innovation, collaboration, and a shared commitment to environmental stewardship, we’re working to ensure our impact on the planet is a positive one - today and for generations to come.
Energy
We are committed to improving energy efficiency across our operations and reducing our environmental impact. Since 2019, we have successfully reduced our electricity consumption by 14% - a clear reflection of our drive to operate more sustainably and responsibly. By reducing the amount of energy we consume, we in turn reduce our carbon emissions.
We have made this progress by implementing a series of energy-saving programmes and trials, including:
We also empower our parks to take action through behaviour change campaigns, and incentivise people by recognising outstanding efforts with the ‘Best Energy Saving Park’ award at the annual awards ceremony.
Looking ahead, we are focused on future-proofing our energy strategy by increasing our use of renewable energy sources and reducing our reliance on fossil fuels. So far, we have installed solar panels on the complex roofs at two parks which on average power 10-15% of the parks’ complex usage.
Waste
We are dedicated to reducing waste across our operations and diverting as much as possible away from landfill so we are continuously improving the waste processes on our parks.
Our improved, segregated recycling streams make it easier for both guests and team members to separate waste and reduce contamination. This means more materials are recycled and less end up in landfill. From improving signage to increasing the number of bins, we’re working closely with our waste suppliers to make recycling easier for everyone. As a result, since 2021, we have successfully diverted 92% of our waste away from landfill.
We’ve delivered both in-person and digital training on waste processes for park teams to ensure consistent standards, reduce contamination, and maximise recycling efforts across our parks.
We’ve also taken steps to eliminate unnecessary single-use plastics. For example, our accommodation teams now use reusable laundry bags, replacing single-use plastic alternatives. This alone removes 70 tonnes of plastic from our operations every year.
In 2023, we partnered with Ecolab to improve sustainability in our cleaning product range. Thanks to the reduced plastic content, the products are easier to recycle and less harsh on the environment, meaning fewer chemicals end up in seas, rivers and lakes.
Water
Water conservation is crucial, so we’re committed to using less as part of our broader environmental goals. Through a series of initiatives and trials, we are working to reduce our consumption.
We have partnered with regional water boards to install water-efficiency equipment in holiday homes across our parks. One example is the use of water flow regulators, which help to reduce and stabilise water pressure entering holiday homes - minimising consumption and preventing leaks. This is complemented by the installation of water-efficient taps and cisterns which have been rolled out to 21 parks.
These upgrades help to significantly reduce water usage without compromising guest comfort or experience and we’ve already seen on average a 10% reduction of water at the parks with this infrastructure installed.
Additionally, we have installed numerous water sensors across our parks and built a dashboard that park teams can use to monitor their water usage. This is helpful in quickly identifying and fixing leaks. By continuously monitoring and improving our water practices, we aim to contribute to a more sustainable future.
Nature
Our parks are situated in stunning locations across the UK, and we are passionate about protecting and preserving the natural beauty of our surrounding environments. We recognise the vital role nature plays in the overall guest experience and are committed to safeguarding it for future generations.
Our commitment to conservation is reflected in our active participation in the Great British Beach Clean, where we work alongside volunteers to help keep our beaches clean and free from litter. In addition, almost all of our parks have completed a wildlife challenge as part of the David Bellamy Pledge for nature. This is a nationwide initiative aimed at protecting wildlife and improving biodiversity, and challenges include creating wildlife-friendly spaces and planting native species.
By fostering a culture of environmental stewardship, we encourage our guests and team members to respect and care for nature. Through these efforts, Parkdean Resorts continues to strive towards a more sustainable future, ensuring our parks and locations remain beautiful and biodiverse for generations to come.
