You can’t beat a British holiday. Building sandcastles on the beach, slurping down an ice cream before it melts and tucking into fish and chips at the seaside. The only slight dampener? The unpredictable British weather.
But our latest research, The Great British Rainy Day Report, proves there’s no reason for a downpour to ruin your fun. Whether you’re embracing the outdoors or cosying up inside, some of the most memorable holiday moments often happen in less-than-perfect weather.
Our report has been designed to help make planning a trip to Britain's beaches and national parks a breeze - even if the weather turns out to be a little more blustery than expected.
Using Met Office and Google data ¹, as well as surveying 1000 Brits ², we’ve uncovered the country’s most rain-proof beaches, the holiday hotspots most likely to see a rainbow, and the surprising benefits of rain for our health and sleep quality.
Embracing rainy days
Famously, Brits love to talk about the weather, so when it comes to those going on a UK holiday this year, the majority (73%) say they would not cut their trip short because of rainy weather.
Over three-quarters (76%) of Brits are planning a staycation this year. Of those who aren’t, two in five (41%) say they would change their mind and book a UK trip if sunny weather were guaranteed.
The best beaches to visit on a rainy day
Holiday criteria: Britain's best beaches, dog walks, coastal cafes
Light showers shouldn’t mean that a beach day is off the table. Britain's coastline can still be a great place to explore on a rainy day, especially with children and dogs.
Our study has uncovered the best beaches to visit even when the weather forecast predicts showers. We analysed data points like shelter opportunities based on each beach's headland, and fetch - the length of open water that a wind can blow in a single direction. We also factored in each location's indoor facilities (including cafes and toilets) and average rainfall to give each location a rainproof score out of 100.
The winning beach? Bournemouth Beach in Dorset topped the list as the best to visit on a rainy day. With over seven miles of award-winning sandy shores, this coastal bay scores a near-perfect 95 on our rain-proof scale. The beach is protected from strong winds by the Isle of Wight to the east, and the Purbeck Hills to the west, and its position within Poole Bay means it benefits from excellent natural shelter. Known for its family-friendly atmosphere, cleanliness and plentiful attractions, Bournemouth Beach makes a great day out come rain or shine, with 12 indoor facilities nearby in case you get caught in a downpour.
Further along the south coast, Exmouth Beach takes second place with a rain-proof score of 94. Positioned along the eastern bank of the River Exe estuary, it benefits from protection against prevailing westerly winds. Combined with its coastal defence structures, it offers excellent shelter from the elements. Popular with watersports enthusiasts and families alike, Exmouth Beach also has six indoor facilities nearby and is recognised as the gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage Jurassic Coast.
At the opposite end of the Jurassic Coast, Weymouth Beach ranks third, with a rain-proof score of 93. Located within a shallow curved bay, with the Isle of Portland to the south acting as a natural breakwater, it is well protected against prevailing winds. The beach also boasts a grand Georgian seafront, easy access to the town centre, and plenty of beachside facilities for shelter when the rain arrives.
Britain's most and least rainy holiday destinations
Holiday criteria: Predictable weather, Scottish getaway, sunny staycation
While it’s safe to say Britain receives its fair share of rain compared to holidays abroad - with around 1,424mm of rainfall on average per year in the UK compared to just 617mm in Spain - some regions definitely require raincoats more often than others³.
Whether you embrace the drizzle or you’re a rain dodger at heart, we’ve identified the rainiest and driest British holiday destinations using weather data from the past five years, so you know how to pack and what to expect.
If you’re hoping to enjoy a quiet stroll and fall asleep to the sound of rainfall, the Isle of Mull in the Inner Hebrides is the holiday destination most prone to showers. The Isle of Mull has a 66% daily chance of rain and an average of 6.6mm of rainfall per day.
Also in the Inner Hebrides, and its largest island, the Isle of Skye is the second rainiest destination for a British holiday. Here, the daily chance of rainfall is 64%, with 6.2mm falling each day on average.
In the heart of the Lake District, Grasmere takes the third rainiest spot for a holiday. The Lakes’ beautiful scenery wouldn’t be the same without a spot of rain. Here, there’s a 57% chance of rain each day, with 6.2mm of rainfall on average.
If you’re a self-proclaimed rain dodger, we’ve done the research and found Britain's least rainy holiday destinations.
The Essex Coast takes the top spot as the driest holiday hotspot, with a 36% daily chance of rain and only 1.8mm of rainfall on average each day.
Known for its long sandy beach and many museums, Great Yarmouth takes second place, with an average daily rainfall of 2mm and a 38% chance of rain.
In joint second place is Whitstable, on the north coast of Kent, which also sees around 2mm of rainfall per day and has a 38% daily chance of rain.
Rainbow holiday hotspots
Holiday criteria: Showers that pass, Cornwall’s coast, rainbow spotting
Without rain, rainbows wouldn’t be possible - and it turns out a Cornwall holiday gives the best chance of spotting one. Even better, a rainbow often signals the passing of a downpour, which is good news for anyone wanting to dodge the drizzle.
For the magic to happen, rain must cross paths with sunshine, but not everywhere has the same luck when it comes to spotting rainbows. Our report reviewed the total hours of rainfall and sunshine British holiday destinations receive, and how often the weather flips between the two throughout the day, to calculate the daily likelihood of seeing a rainbow.
In first place is Helston in Cornwall, often known as the gateway to the Lizard Peninsula. Helston is one of the most southerly towns in the UK, which helps explain why it has one of the highest average daily sunshine hours in the study, at 6.6 hours a day. Combined with 4.6 hours of daily rainfall on average, this holiday destination has a 55% daily chance of having a rainbow and frequent short showers that pass quickly.
In second place on the northern coast of Cornwall is St Ives, which receives slightly more rainfall than Helston at 4.7 hours but less sunshine at 6.2 hours, giving it a 51% daily chance of spotting a rainbow.
Further up the Cornish coast and sharing third place, with a 51% chance of a rainbow, is Padstow. This picturesque fishing port receives, on average, 4.8 hours of rain and 6.3 hours of sunshine.
The good news is, the South East coast isn’t the only British rainbow hotspot, as Llandudno North and Rhyl Beach in Wales take seventh and ninth place, but fear not Northerners, Bridlington comes in at eighth place.
Rain is the secret to a sound night's sleep
Holiday criteria: Rest & recovery, soothing nature sounds, cosy nights
We might be biased, but there's nothing better to fall asleep to than the soothing sound of rain, especially on a caravan roof. For lots of Brits, it brings feelings of nostalgia and makes us sentimental for our childhood holidays.
It’s such a relaxing sound; many Brits are turning to Spotify and other music streaming platforms to recreate the calming effects. Our study found that nearly half (45%) of Brits have to listen to or watch something at bedtime every night to ensure they can sleep. One in ten (10%) Brits listen to nature-inspired sounds every night to help them drift off, with a further 43% admitting they do often.
Spotify's own Nature Sounds playlist has been saved 1.4 million times, while the Rain Sounds version has 1.1 million saves. Dave recommends 60 minutes of wind-down time to help you drift off to sleep. For those craving the relaxing sounds of rain hitting the roof of a caravan, we’ve created our own Spotify playlist, compiling 60 minutes of soothing noise to help you next doze off: Caravan Rain Sounds by Parkdean.
Sleep expert and founder of The Sleep Site, Dave Gibson, explains why the sound of nature, particularly steady rain, helps us to drift off.
Dave explains: “The main therapeutic effect of steady rain is that it helps our autonomic nervous system enter the ‘rest and digest’ state, after naturally shifting between fight or flight and relaxation state throughout the day. This is the state we need to enter to fall asleep.
“For this to happen, the brain needs to feel that the environment we are about to fall asleep in is both safe and predictable. The steady, predictable, and rhythmic drumming of rain on a caravan roof creates a kind of ‘sound cocoon’, very similar to pink noise, which helps us relax.
“From a psychological perspective, being warm and dry in bed while it's raining outside can give us a sense that we have shelter and safety, which further supports sleep.”
The benefits of spending time outdoors, rain or shine
Holiday criteria: Time in nature, switching off, stress-free holidays
Our study found that nearly all (93%) Brits notice that their sleep is better after spending time outdoors during the day. That’s true whether it’s sunny or rainy, Dave explains:
“Being in nature provides a double benefit for sleep. It reduces stress, helping lower cortisol levels, and strengthens our body clock through exposure to natural light.
“Being outdoors exposes the brain to natural light exposure. This plays a crucial biological role in sleep as it strengthens our circadian rhythm, which is our body clock, which, in turn, supports the natural timing of the sleep hormone melatonin’s release later that evening.”
Dr Ravi Gill, Practitioner Psychologist, has shared the three main health benefits of spending time outdoors, no matter the weather:
1. Improved mental health and stress reduction: “Spending time outdoors is strongly associated with lower stress levels.”
2. Stronger physical health: “Outdoor time typically increases movement, which supports cardiovascular health, muscle strength and metabolic regulation, and sunlight exposure supports vitamin D production, which plays a role in immune function, bone health and mood regulation.”
3. Improved immune function and resilience: “Exposure to diverse natural environments introduces the body to a broader range of microbes, which can support immune diversity.”
How to make the most of a rainy family staycation
Holiday criteria: Family staycation, quality time, creating memories
The UK has lots to offer when it comes to family holidays, although inevitably, guaranteed sunshine isn’t one of them. However, this shouldn’t stop you from making amazing memories with your family. After all, dogs and children alike love the rain, so why don’t adults?
Ravi explains: ”It’s worth being mindful of how we talk about rain in front of children. Young children don’t automatically see rain as bad, they learn that meaning from adult reactions. If parents repeatedly describe rainy weather as disappointing, ruined or unlucky, children may begin to associate it with frustration rather than curiosity.”
Ravi shares five ways to embrace wet weather and not let it spoil any upcoming UK family holidays.
1. Let go of perfection, shift from ‘perfect weather’ to ‘flexible fun’: “If we mentally attach the holiday to blue skies, anything else feels like a loss. Instead, frame the trip around experiences rather than weather. Children, particularly under eight, respond more to adult emotional cues than to the weather itself.”
2. Build a ‘both/ and’ plan: “Rather than hoping for sunshine, plan for both possibilities.”
3. Reframe rain as a sensory experience: “For children, puddles, mud and wind are not inconveniences; they’re sensory play opportunities. Rainy beach walks, storm watching from a window, or hot chocolate after a wet walk can become the most memorable moments.”
4. Lower the performance pressure: “UK holidays can carry an unspoken pressure to justify the cost with constant activity. Rain can feel like it’s wasting the trip, but we forget rest doesn’t need sunshine.”
5. Model emotional flexibility: “For families, the biggest protective factor is adult regulation. If parents say, ‘This isn’t what we planned, but we’ll adapt’, children internalise flexibility rather than frustration. That’s a life skill far more valuable than a sunny day.”
Come rain or shine, holidays with loved ones should be about creating memories and spending quality time together. Book now to secure your next coastal getaway or overdue family get-together.
Methodology
¹Beach rankings were calculated using a weighted scoring model designed to identify UK beaches that remain enjoyable during rainy weather. Physical coastal shelter was measured using headland enclosure (%), fetch distance (km) and the number of indoor amenities within 500 metres to reflect nearby rain-proof activities. These variables were normalised and combined into a Rainproof Score, with shelter and exposure weighted most heavily and indoor amenities providing an additional accessibility factor. The final scores were scaled and ranked to highlight beaches that are both physically sheltered and well supported by nearby indoor attractions during wet conditions.
Weather data was sourced from the Open-Meteo API, analysing hourly conditions for each location over a 12-month period (8,784 hours). Locations were scored based on the frequency of rain-to-sun transitions, the key meteorological condition required for rainbows to form when sunlight appears after rainfall. This metric was weighted most heavily and supported by additional indicators including overall weather transitions (flips per day) and the percentage of rainy and sunny hours. Locations were then ranked using a combined weighted score to identify places where rain and sunlight most frequently occur in quick succession.
A seed list of 100 popular UK holiday destinations was compiled to analyse rainfall patterns across the country. Historical weather data for each location was sourced from the Open-Meteo API. Five years of daily rainfall data were analysed for every destination to establish typical weather conditions. From this dataset, the following metrics were calculated for each location: Average daily rainfall (mm), number of rainy days, number of dry days, and percentage of rainy days. Destinations were then ranked by average daily rainfall to identify the wettest and driest holiday locations in the UK based on long-term weather patterns.
To ensure clarity in visualisations and mapping, some coastal destinations located within approximately 10 miles of each other were grouped into regional clusters.
²500 UK men and 500 women were surveyed using the platform Onepulse on their thoughts about British holidays and their sleeping habits, as well as whether they have a staycation planned for this year.
