If you're planning a walk, particularly if the walk is strenuous or a relatively long distance, it's important that you're fully prepared with the correct clothing and equipment so that you can complete your walk safely. See our checklist below with some guidance on what to wear and bring with you.
We'd also recommend ensuring that you've planned out your full route in advance and not to attempt any difficult walks in adverse weather conditions, or if you don't feel you have appropriate experience or the fitness level required.
- Waterproof clothing, such as a waterproof jacket and trousers
- Proper walking boots and socks
- Extra layers, preferably both insulating and breathable
- A comfortable rucksack
- Food and water to make sure you stay hydrated
- Walking poles
- Sun protection
- A map and compass - don't rely on your mobile phone as you may not always have a strong GPS signal!
