Why is Torquay called the English Riviera?

Devon's Torbay area, home to the town of Torquay, is often referred to as The English Riviera because of its exceptionally warm climate and speactacular beaches, sharing a likeness with the Mediterranean Riviera.

Its spectacular scenery and unique geology led The English Riviera to be designated as an official UNESCO Global Geopark, cementing its name as the 'English Riviera Geopark'.
