What is Halloween about?
Halloween is one of the most-loved holidays around the world and most of us probably associate this time of year with dressing up in fancy dress and taking the kids trick or treating. But in fact, our favourite October tradition dates back thousands of years and originated as a Celtic celebration of Samhain, a festival marking the end of the harvest season. History tells us that the Celts along with other cultures like Judaism considered Halloween to be the time of year when the seal between the living and the dead was at its weakest, allowing communication between the two worlds.
If we fast forward a few centuries, further influence from Christian popes brought about the term ‘All Hallows’ Eve’, which served as the day before All Saints’ or All Hallows’ Day, honouring all Christian saints.
Eventually, the Halloween we all know and love today began to take shape, with cultures all over the world adapting the old traditions into modern versions of the festivities like telling ghost stories, carving pumpkins and playing games.
