Famed for its flavoursome kippers, this seaside village features a small, stout harbour outlined by rugged fisherman’s cottages, giving Craster a refreshingly authentic feel. The scenery here is just as evocative, with Dunstanburgh Castle, an immense battle-scarred fortress, towering over the surrounding countryside.
To reach the castle, walk along a beautiful stretch of the Northumberland Coast Path from Craster’s harbour. It passes above wave-swept rocks and offers impressive ocean vistas, before arriving at the coastal headland upon which the ruins stand. The massive towers of its keep are awe-inspiring.
Afterwards, continue on to discover Embleton Bay, a lonely beach with vast swathes of golden sand – the perfect spot to sit down, relax and soak up the stunning views.
Back in Craster, grab a pint in the village’s classic pub, The Jolly Fisherman, or tuck into fresh seafood at the well-rated restaurant or cafe.
