The origins of the name of Lizard Point and the wider Lizard Peninsula are up for debate. While it's commonly believed its namesake comes from the natural serpentine stone found in the area, recognisable by its green, lizard-like finish, this is known to be untrue. Instead, it's believed the name may come from an old Cornish dialect, with 'Lezuo' (which roughly translates to 'headland') or 'Lys Ardh' (which translates to 'high court') being the most likely sources.
