Whether you are a sea angling enthusiast or prefer sitting by a tranquil lake to go fly fishing, we have you covered.

To ensure that you make the most of your stay here in Dorset, we’ve teamed up with a selection of angling experts, from fishing trip providers to local angling clubs, to advise you on the best fishing spots to explore.

Fishing Tails

According to Fishing Tails, Chesil Beach is regarded as the mecca for most sea anglers, whether they are targeting spring plaice, summer bream, or winter cod. Thousands of fishermen, many living hundreds of miles away, flock to Chesil Beach every year.

In the summer months many locals will head down to the beach after work in search of fresh mackerel. It normally only takes a few casts to land enough for the whole family.

Fishing Tails advises that Chesil Beach is not the only venue worth fishing though. Fishing Tails guide clients on lure fishing trips, hunting out hard fighting bass, pollock and stunningly colourful wrasse from the rugged rock and kelp strewn coastline.

From St Albans Head, through Kimmeridge Bay to the Isle of Portland, there cannot be many more stunning or productive marks for lure fishermen in the land, especially at dawn and dusk.

Weymouth Angling Society

Weymouth Angling Society believes that angling in Weymouth is amongst some of the best in the country. It has one of the largest charter fleets due to the prolific fishing out of the port. The many wrecks, reefs and sandbanks provide year-round angling.

Many World and European competitions have been held out of Weymouth due to the fantastic array of fish that can be caught.

The shore fishing is also outstanding. From the mighty Chesil Beach to the rocky headlands of Portland, and onto the Jurassic coastal waters to the east. All are capable of throwing up amazing catches. Both of the town’s piers are family friendly and offer great fishing for many summer species.

Weymouth Angling Club is a central point for anglers. Their well-stocked bar and friendly staff will be glad to serve all visiting anglers and their families.

There are two tackle shops available to anglers, Weymouth Angling Centre in the main town alongside the harbour, and Chesil Bait ‘n’ Tackle on the main road to Chesil and Portland. Knowledgeable staff are always able to give good service and local advice.
