I will start with the positives.. firstly Highfield Grange is in such a fantastic location with bus stops literally outside the main entrance on either side of the road. And there is SO many places these busses take you I mean, we visited Colchester Zoo, Clacton Centre & Pier, and various other not so exciting places using only busses. There’s also a bus stop right outside of Clacton station which takes you right outside the holiday park which is a huge bonus considering I traveled with my one year old and a large suitcase. There is also a 24 hour Tesco’s literally a 5 minute walk away which came in very handy. The lady at reception was lovely and helped me out with some places to visit and check in and out was a quick and easy process and luckily for us we were able to check in around 30/40 minutes before the 4pm check in time.
Although.. there were some negatives about our trip which were rather disappointing and I feel that there is some information that should have been made clear to all visiting Highfield Grange in the winter months. Firstly, unfortunately the fish and chip shop on site had burnt down prior to our visit and at the time was being rebuilt. Visitors should have been informed of this incident prior to arrival as it is the only take away on site. And if you’re like myself after a long day travelling plans had been made to grab some chips and head back to the caravan for an early night instead it was a walk around in the dark to find the Tesco’s up the road and then back to prepare a meal by this time I had one unhappy toddler and I wasn’t too impressed myself with the check in time being late afternoon it didn’t leave us with many options. Secondly, the Nisa store on site was horrendous! Absolutely empty! The only bread available was to be used the same day, no drinks minus energy drinks and alcohol. No actual food in the store whatsoever. Upon making a joke about how empty the shop was I was informed that at this time of year as the shop is due to close they are restricted on what they can order meaning once again other arrangements had to be made (another blooming trip to Tesco)!! I was a paying customer just like people that visited in the warmer months yet it seems the later you go in the year the less they care about what is being made available which is such a shame.
Next, the swimming pool.. the pool is open to general customers twice a day which is disappointing as it would be nice to be able to have had access at other points during the day and this put me off using the pool altogether due to having a time limit. Maybe this again, is just in the winter months which potentially makes it even worse.
Lastly, the lighting around the park is minimal and there is a lot of dark areas within the park that could do with being lit up. In the summer I suppose this isn’t an issue but in the winter it definitely is. Walking through a dark park with a pushchair is not fun and was also quite nerving for me. Also with barely anyone around it didn’t feel entirely safe either as there was no sign of any security or any staff members around the site.
I would 100% come back to Highfield Grange again but definitely not in the colder months and I would strongly recommend against visiting from November onwards.

Very poor, not much going on, understand it was late on the year but only one choice of food and staff just seemed they didn't want to be there.

Hi Francine,

Thank you for your review.

Sometimes the cleaning of an accommodation may take longer if it has not been left in an acceptable state by the previous guests, this is why we do advise check-in is from 4pm and unfortunately, we are unable to guarantee you will be in your accommodation at 4pm. Of course, we will always try to give you access to your accommodation early if it is ready, we are sorry we weren't able to do so on this occasion.

We are pleased to hear overall you enjoyed your stay.
