Surprisingly Secret Beaches

If you dream of wandering mile after mile of uninterrupted white sands, then the beaches in Northumberland & County Durham are for you. Best of all, you’ll often have them all to yourself!

Astonishingly underrated and frequently overlooked, the beaches here are beautifully powdery, impeccably clean and awash with character - these are the sands on which Viking raiders landed, pilgrims trekked and genteel Victorians lazed.

Take the beach at Bamburgh Castle. Immense, dune-backed sands seem to stretch into infinity and above, the towering spectacle of the stronghold itself. It’s beyond atmospheric.

King Edward’s Bay in Tynemouth further ramps up the drama. The picture-postcard cove is the ideal spot for admiring the town’s crumbling castle and priory, while neighbouring Longsands Beach is tailor-made for surfing. The elegant seaside resort is a favourite spot for foodies too.

For something altogether different, head to Seaham Beach and hunt for vivid, multi-coloured sea glass.nty Durham.
