About Mersea Island
Barely eight miles across, this miniature island is surprisingly packed with adventures. Once you’ve crossed the causeway, you’ll invariably be drawn to West Mersea, the island’s capital. Here you can dine on famous Colchester Native oysters, go crabbing on the pontoon or partake in any number of thrilling watersports including kayaking, windsurfing and kitesurfing.
For a slightly more sedate experience, catch a boat tour around the harbour area and spot birdlife and maybe even the odd seal! Back on shore, you can delve into the fishing community’s past at the Mersea Island Museum - which includes some excellent Roman artefacts.
Things become even more peaceful at the eastern end of the island where you’ll discover Cudmore Grove Country Park, a wildlife-filled wonderland characterised by its golden beach, meadows and marshland. It’s the perfect spot to play on the sands and enjoy brisk seaside walks, and there’s a new adventure play area for the kids too.
