Chic dining, incredible ocean views and two amazing Blue Flag winning beaches, are just some of the reasons this elegant Victorian seaside town is often voted one of the best places to live in Britain – and it’s equally fantastic for family days out!

The waves that break onto the beautiful, and aptly named, Longsands Beach offer top-class surfing conditions, and you can learn to master them at the nearby school. While King Edward’s Bay is a lovely sheltered sandy cove overlooked by the town’s other star attraction – Tynemouth Castle and Priory.

Dominating the skyline, this once colossal fortress has over 2,000 years of history to uncover, including evocative gravestones and WW1 gun emplacements. The clifftop perspectives are superb too!

Afterwards, wander down to fun-loving Front Street with its excellent wine bars, quirky cafes, traditional pubs and terrific fish and chip shops.
